Boxford Rovers 2 v 0 Uni of Essex Our midweek games saw the University teams still playing catch up. On Tuesday in Division 1, their 4th XI went down 2-0 at home to the newly crowned champions Boxford Rovers, for whom Luke Waugh netted both goals, whilst in the process of increasing his lead at the top of the Division1 goal scoring charts. In Division 2, the 5th XI. and the Blades played each other and finished in a 3-1 win for the their 5th XI with William Sarfaz and Jack Bending with a brace scoring for the 5th XI and Vishal Patel for the Blades. Boxford Rovers 5 v 0 New Field Boxford Rovers 10 v 1 Abbey Fields Boxford Rovers now only need one more point to secure the title as they hammered a luckless Abbey Fields 10-1, with Anthony Waugh, doubles from Timothy Kerr and Peter Whitwell, four from Luke Waugh plus an own goal getting their goals. Boxford Rovers 2 v 3 Tollesbury After ET The Great Bromley Cup will see Colne Engaine and Tollesbury play out the final this year after both the Premiership high flyers came through their semi finals with Colne Engaine putting out Brightlingsea Regent ‘A’ 2-1 and Tollesbury putting out a gallant Boxford Rovers 3-2 after extra time; it was 1-1 at the end of full time. Ben Dixon and Dominic Emery scored for Boxford. Tollesbury went behind in the third minute after they conceded a penalty and then they continued to miss chance after chance until the 83rd minute when Jamie Baker headed in a fine Steven Hope cross. In the firth few seconds of extra time, Corin Haynes headed in from twelve yards, converting another fine cross, this time from Jamie Bright. Ben Hull added a third before Boxford scored their second in the final five minutes. Boxford Rovers 4 v 0 Nayland Rangers Boxford Rovers 4 v 3 University of Essex 3rd XI When the Premier division team from the University of Essex turned up at Boxford's home ground, Homefields, on a boiling hot day it was obvious that they were taking the League Knock Out Cup Quarter Final match seriously as they included players the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams. Boxford started the game very brightly but some how found themselves 2v0 down, thanks to a shot that went through several of the Boxfords defence legs and a long ranged effort that was miss judged by Andy Mackie in goal, within the first 10 minutes. Boxford reacted brilliantly to going behind and were unlucky when Dom Emery hit the post from a corner. They thought they were back in the game when they were awarded a penalty, but Pete Whitwell had his effort saved by the keeper, his 3rd in a row. It wasnt long before Boxford had another chance from the spot and this time it was slotted away by Matt Silver. Matt Silver, never a prolific scorer, then had a massive hand in Boxfords equaliser, when his long free kick was headed into his own net by the Uni defender. There was a claim from Luke Waugh that he had got a head to it, which is yet to be confirmed. The second half was another tight period with both teams performing well, and both finding the net, with Boxfords 3rd coming from their top scorer Luke Waugh, meaning the game went into extra time. Both teams went for the win, but it was Boxfords attack that proved most lethal. Matt Patrick thought he was through when he turned the defender in the box, only for him to be brought down for Boxfords 3rd penalty of the game. This time the teams usual penalty taker, Ben Dixon, took responsiblity and smashed it home. When the final whistle went Boxford where overjoyed at getting through, against a difficult opposition, to their 2nd semi final of the season, with a potential 3rd to play for. League Knock Out Cup Quarter final round up Saturday saw the League Knock Out Cup quarter finals and it was a day of shocks with wins for the Division 1 underdogs over Premiership opposition, Brantham Athletic ‘A’, winning 1-0 at Tollesbury with an 80th minute goal from Alex Stocker, after having an earlier effort disallowed. Tollesbury may have been suffering from 'after the lord mayor’s show' but there was no fluke about the visitors win over the Amos Cup winners. Fellow Division 1 high flyers Boxford Rovers went to extra time before defeating the University of Essex 3rd XI, 4-3. The goals here came from Ben Dixon and Matt Silver penalties and a brace from Luke Waugh forBoxford and Shaun Brown and a Shane Rowland double for the University boys. The third placed Division 1 side Clacton United Reserves also won away at Oyster by 3-2 with goals from Ashley Boyce and a Lacina Sylla double. On the score sheet for Oyster were Alex Pacey and James Rutter. The all Premiership affair went the way of the leaders Colne Engaine with a Thomas Earle effort and an own goal in a 2-0 defeat of Colchester Hotspurs. Semi Final Draw - to be played Saturday 7th May at Essex University, 2.15 kick off Colne Engaine v Boxford Rovers Brantham Athletic 'A' v Clacton United Reserves Boxford Rovers 7 v 0 Harwich Rangers Boxford Rovers entertained Harwich Rangers to start what could be a very busy two months for Boxford, in which they could potentially play 17 games if they continue to progress in the cups. Boxford dominated the game from the start and it didnt take long for them to take the lead. When Boxford were awarded a penalty after a foul, there were some worried looks due to the amount of missed penalties recently by boxford players, but Ben Dixon slotted home confidently. The lead was double when Pete Whitwell scored a goal of the season contender. Whitwell turned past two players before curling the ball top corner from outside the box. Boxford went 3v0 up after Tim Kerr converted from close range and that is how it stayed till half time. The second half started whith Boxford playing alot of sloppy passes and not really playing any decent football. The introduction off the bench of Luke Waugh, who is coming back from a recent injury, sparked some life into the Boxford team. He quickly notched his first of the game from a Gooch long throw scoring with his head at the back post. His second saw him break through on goal and take the ball coolly around the keeper before scoring.Boxfords defence was solid throughout the game and didnt give Harwich many opportunities to score. Boxfords sixth came from sub Gregg Hills and the rout was completed after Waugh completed his hattrick to make the final score 7v0 to Boxford. Next up, Boxford again turn their attentions to the cups as the face a trick tie against the University 3rd XI. Marks Tey 0 v 1 Boxford Rovers Boxford travelled to Marks Tey to take them on in the quarter finals of the Great Bromley Cup! Boxford had most of their big guns back for the game and were pretty confident in progressing to the first of what could be three semi finals this year. The first half was a pretty even affair which was probably edged by Boxford! Both Boxfords strikers, Matt Patrick and Tim Kerr, had chances but were unable to convert meaning it was all square at the break. When the second half began Boxford were fast asleep. A long ball straight from the kickoff bemused the Boxford defence and keeper and the ball was hit towards goal by the Marks Tey striker! Only a last ditch goal line clearance by Dom Emery kept the scores level! This spured Boxford forward and they were soon ahead after a free kick was slotted home from Ben Dixon! Boxford continued to push forward and waste many good oppurtunities, but they hung on to progress to the semis! Which Boxford will now play Tollesbury in the Semi at Colchester Uni on the 16th of April Quarter Final day of the Great Bromley Cup and saw Tollesbury go through to a Semi-Final against Boxford Rovers following their 3-2 win over St Osyth Reserves. For long periods of the game St Osyth gave Tollesbury a great deal to think about and were more than a match for the high flying Premier Division club. In fact, it was against the run of play when Simon King gave Tollesbury the lead late in the first half. It was no surprise when St Osyth equalised early in the second half through Shaun Hanney and they continued to match Tollesbury until the last twenty minutes when Ryan Hull scored twice to put Tollesbury through. Boxford scraped through 1-0 over a gallant Marks Tey side with a second half goal. The top two Premier Division sides Colne Engaine and Harwich Parkeston need extra time to separate them before Colne Engaine went through to Semi-Final against Brightlingsea Regent ‘A’. Brightlingsea being involved in an eleven goal 6-5 thriller against AFC Informa before going through by the odd goal Great Bentley 1 v 2 Boxford Rovers Great Bentley V Boxford Rovers 19th March 2011 The Mighty Boxford played away this week to a Great Bentley team who always put in a sterling effort. The match kicked off with a somewhat distorted team and players playing out of their usual position, But true to the Boxford form every one soon got to grips with it and SWANSBOROUGH, SILVER and HAYTON at the back soon showed great composure and settled the team down (those 3 are great!!!). All the Boxford players battled hard and soon showed a determind Bentley team that you don't mess with the Boxford boys and took the lead through and Greg Hills shot which only cannoned off about 7 opposition players before going in, but Hills still claimed it. Bentley soon had chance to reply with a terrible decision for a penalty but the massive structure of Mackay in goal put off the Bentley penalty taker and he booted the ball well over the bar. Greg hayton played a brilliant game in right back position and cleared all loose balls up. Pete whitwell was given the job of putting the game to bed with another penalty decision but with a tremendous shot the Bentley goal keeper managed to keep the ball out. So the match was 1-0 to Boxford at the break and a new face in the team was showing his strength and determination Shane. The second half kicked off and again Boxford made things difficult for themselves by giving silly balls away and not passing easy balls to feet and this showed as the Bentley forwards broke through and a shot came back of goal keeper Mackay and a deffensive stummbling Hayton had no where to go and could only steer the ball goalwards for an equaliser for Bentley. A few changes where made to the Boxford team which introduced Alex (Boris) Cunningham to the field and with only a few minutes left Boris had the ball played to his feet with pace and he slotted the winner home with great conviction. Final score Great Bentley 1 Boxford Rovers 2 MOM Shane Cup Update After the success against New Fields on Saturday, Boxford continue their pursuit for some cup glory this year. Boxford remain in the League Knockout Cup, the Great Bromley Cup and the Acorn Charity Cup. These are the Fixtures up next for Boxford in the Cups:- League Knockout Cup - Quarter Final Boxford Rovers v University of Essex 3rd XI - Saturday 9th April Great Bromley Cup - Semi Final Boxford Rovers v Tollesbury - Saturday 16th April Acorn Charity Cup - Quarter Final Boxford Rovers v Colne Engaine Reserves - Friday 22nd April Boxford Rovers 4v0 New Field After nearly having to play at Newton green due to poor pitch standard, Boxford managed to pull it out of the bag again and the Homefield pitch was repaired and fully functional ready for kickoff in this cup match clash. Boxford started the match with a spring in their step and a casual yet confident attitude and they soon out played the New Field opposition with Tim Kerr scoring very early on after only 5 minutes. The Boxford heads were up and the ball was being pinged all over the park making it hard for any reply from the away team although the rough centre of the pitch was making ball control very difficult. Tim Kerr then added another with only 30 minutes on the clock with an assist from Pete Whitwell. Just before the break Luke Waugh came off with a suspected groin strain and the decision by manager Rich Robinson to rest him was a brave but correct move so as not to finish Waugh's season early. So 2-0 at the break and Boxford the stronger team which showed as goal keeper Andy Mackie had no opportunity to show off his skills as he did not make a single save in the first half. The second half kicked off and Boxford made life difficult for them selves by giving easy balls away and allowing New Field to attack, but with 15 minutes left on the clock Boxford broke the spell and Tim Kerr scored his hatrick of the game. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Pete Whitwell (who had played a stormer!!) broke through and made it 4-0 and a place in the quarter finals for Boxford. MOM Pete Whitwell Team - Mackie, A. Waugh, Dixon, Emery, Hills, Wilkins, R. Kossick, Whitwell(1(MoM)), M. Kerr, T. Kerr(3), L. Waugh SUBS - Swansbouorgh, Gooch Boxford Rovers 4v2 New Field After a week of poor weather, the match was close to being called off for the second week in a row. Luckily the match went ahead, and Boxford started really well with a goal in the first 5 minutes of the game. Good work down the left resulted in a cross being turned home from close range by Luke Waugh. Boxford continued to play well, but conceded against the run of play. A mistake from Andy Mackie at the corner let New Fields equalise and another poor goal so them take the lead. Boxford bounced back when Matt Patrick made a good run into the box and was ‘taken out’ by the New Fields defender and a penalty was given, which Ben Dixon slotted home. The second half started and Boxford quickly went ahead after Luke Waugh grabbed his second of the game. The rest of the second half was mainly a midfield battle with big challenges going in from both sides. With minutes to spare Luke Waugh smashed in another goal to complete his hat trick and to send Boxford through to the next round. Team – Mackie, Emery, Silver, A. Waugh, Hills, L. Waugh(3(MoM)), Wilkins, B. Patrick, B. Dixon(1), T. Kerr, M. Patrick SUBS – Harris, Swansbouorgh, R. Kossick Division One Update In Division One, Brantham Athletic ‘A’ took advantage of previous leaders Boxford Rovers involvement in the Bromley Cup, to take over at the top with a 5-2 victory at University of Essex 4th XI, with goals from Scott Cooke, Ross Cooper, Robin Fairweather and a double from Josh Mann. Third placed Clacton United Reserves went down 4-3 at Witchfinders for whom Lee Gregory and Craig Maskell both scored two apiece, whilst. Earlier in the week ex-player Pete Whitwell returned from 9 months in Australia and he will be looking to get back into the team a.s.a.p.. Boxford started well and were quickly in to the lead after a great move down the left wing involving both the Waugh brothers saw and easy tap in for Matt Patrick to score. The lead was quickly double after a James Kossick corner was headed goal wards by Dom Emery. The keeper blocked the shot but the ball fell to captain Lee Wilkins to score his first for the season. Just before halftime Luke Waugh grabbed another goal to give Boxford a comfortable 3v0 lead at half time. The second half went much the same way as the first half with Boxford dominating the game and despite stringing a few passes together Witchfinders never really threatening. Boxford’s fourth came from another J. Kossick corner and this time Dom Emery found the back of the net at the back post. Then came the pick of the goals, Matt Kerr made a strong tackle at the edge of the Witchfinders area and then smashed the ball in the top corner from about 20 yards out, giving the keeper no chance. Boxford were looking to keep a fourth consecutive clean sheet but a breakaway goal ended their run. A long range shot found the bottom corner of Mackie's goal to make the score 5v1 to Boxford. Straight from kick off, in form Ben Dixon tried an outrageous attempt to score from the half way line. The shot struck the post signalling an end to Dixon's run of goals recently. Before the game ened, Matt Patrick and Luke Waugh both added their seconds of the game to make the final score 7v1. Team - Mackie, Emery(1), Silver(MoM), Swansborough(B. Patrick), Wilkins(1), M. Kerr(1), Dixon(Harris), J. Kossick(Hills), A. Waugh, M. Patrick(2), L. Waugh(2) Next Saturday, Boxford host mid table Harwich Rangers in the league, before the big cup game the following Saturday against New Fields, who are the only team to have beaten Boxford in the last 2 years in the league. Boxford Rovers Reserves 7v6 Barnadiston Arms - Sunday 13th February 2011 Boxford Reserves flew out of the traps and smashed 6 first half goals to lead 6v1 at halftime. The second half proved to be a different story as Barnadiston fought back to lose 7v6. The star man of the day was Luke Waugh who scored 5 goals to win the game for the Reserves. Next week Boxford Reserves will play AFC Thurlow at home.
Division One Update Again the top three teams all won, with leaders Boxford Rovers hitting seven with only one in reply from Witchfinders. The scorers for Boxford were Dominic Emery, Matthew Kerr, Lee Wilkins and doubles from Matthew Patrick and Luke Waugh. Brantham Athletic ‘A’ in second hit five past Feering, scoring for Brantham were Joel Andrews, Scott Cooke, Robert Page and brace from Ross Cooper. James Fitzgerald hit Feering’s reply, whilst third placed Clacton United Reserves had a 3-1 victory at home to University of Essex 4th XI. Nayland Rangers won 5-1 at home to Wimpole 200 Reserves and Abbey Fields, with goals from Emy David, Scott Martin and Charlie Wood came back from 3-0 down to win 3-2 against fourth placed New Field after New Field missed a penalty that would have put them 3-0 up. New Field’s scorers were Clayton Schofield and Kristian Lissimore. The game of the day in this division was Harwich Rangers at home to Great Bentley ‘A’ which ended in 5-4 win for Great Bentley. Matthew Good with two, Stuart Mason and Nick White scored for Harwich whilst Bentley’s goals came from Ryan Gooch, Andrew Parlette, Matthew Sage-French and a double from Jake Vaughan AFC Informa 0v2 Boxford Rovers Boxford went to Colchester to play AFC Informa in the league this weekend, with a strong team. There was also a very strong wind for the players to deal with. There was a scare during the warm up when Ben Taylor collided with the post but he shock off his injuries to start the game. Boxford adapted quickly to the conditions and looked to score early on. Man in form, Ben Dixon, grabbed his fifth goal in six games with a strong header in to the bottom corner. Boxford should have extended the lead when Dom Emery went close with three headers, two of which were cleared off the line, but the score remained 1v0 at the break. The second half was an even game and AFC Informa thought they had levelled only for Matt Silver to acrobatically clear the ball off the line. With the game heading for injury time Boxford put together one final attack and a ball crossed in for the left was headed home by Ben Taylor to confirm a 2v0 victory for Boxford and extend their lead at the top of the table. Team – Mackie, Emery, Silver, R. Kossick (Gooch), Hills (A. Cunningham), Taylor (1), M. Kerr (MoM), Dixon (1), J. Kossick, T. Kerr Boxford’s next game is at home to the Witchfinders, who have had an indifferent season so far. Early rumours that manager Richard Robinson hadn’t dipped into the transfer market were untrue as there will be some new additions to the team. More news to follow next week on this. Assington Villa 3v1 Boxford Reserves Boxford Reserves played against Assington Villa in the Division 2 Knockout cup. Boxford took a first half lead when Assington failed to clear a corner and Will Ward was on hand to smash it home. The second half proved to be a different game as Assington scored 3 goals to knock Boxford out the cup in quarter finals. Next week Boxford Reserves play Barnardiston Arms, who are one place behind them in the league so it will be a tricky game. Division One Update Div One had wins for Abbey Fields, 4-2 over University of Essex 4th XI. Boxford Rovers 2-0 over AFC Informa with goals from Ben Dixon and Benjamin Taylor, Wimpole 2000 Reserves 2-1 away at Great Bentley. Harwich Rangers won 3-1 away at Witchfinders. The other two games in this division were both 1-1 draws. Amos Cup This years Amos Cup Final will be between Tollesbury & Harwich & Parkeston Reserves following their respective semi-final wins at the University. Tollesbury beat Castle Hotspurs 5-0 Cinque Port 0v2 Boxford Rovers
Boxford prepared for their League Knock Out Cup round 2 match against Premier Division Cinque Port with a visit to the local LA Fitness, who sponsor our away shirt, to take part in a spin class. There was a good turn out from the team as 14 of the players took part and the session turned out to be a popular fitness boost by the team, as well as a great team bonding exercise, and looks likely to become a regular fixture.
Boxford’s team for the match against Cinque Port threw up a of new face Alex Cunningham, playing their first games for the first team this year. Boxford started brightly in a physical game and showed no signs of fatigue after the midweek spin class, and took the lead midway through the first half after Ben Dixon, who can’t stop scoring at the moment, headed in a free kick. Boxford held that lead through to halftime thanks to the great battling sprit shown by the whole team, in particular man of the match Ben Taylor. The second half went very much the same as the first and Boxford doubled their lead after Alex Cunningham played the ball off the post to land at the feet of Matt Patrick to slot home from a tight angle. Boxford never really looked likely to concede with the whole team defending very solidly and the game ended 2v0 and Boxford progress to the quarter finals of the cup. The performance was one of the best team performances of the whole season and was the second clean sheet in a row. The draw for the next round has thrown Boxford up against the only team to beat them in league in the last two season, New Fields, and they will look to make it through to the cup final.
Team – Mackie, Emery, Silver, Gooch, Taylor, Hills, Wilkins, Dixon(1), M. Kerr, A. Cunningham, M. Patrick(1)
With the transfer window due to shut this week, manager Richard Robinson has been rumoured to say that he is happy with the squad he has at the moment and can’t see any comings or goings happening this month.
Boxford’s next game is away to AFC Informa in the league, Informa are struggling in the league at the moment but Boxford are expecting a tough game.
Boxford Reserves game was cancelled this week due to the other team not having enough players. No news yet on if Boxford will be handed the win for the game. Boxford Rovers 6-0 Great Bentley 'A' After the brilliant performance and win against Clacton one week ago, the confidence was high when Boxford entertained Great Bentley ‘A’. Boxford started with an attacking line up and quickly took advantage of the game, with Luke Waugh banging in the first of the game. The lead was quickly double when Tim Kerr scored with a great strike from inside the box. Boxford’s third wasn’t far away and it came from a deep free kick delivered by Richard Kossick which was headed in by Ben Dixon, who continues his rich run in front of goal scoring 6 goal in the last 4 games. With half time quickly approaching, James Kossick jinxed through the Bentley defence and slotted home with a neat finish to give Boxford a 4v0 lead at half time. An injury to Matt Silver lead to a change in tactics and Boxford never really gelled in the second half. However they still managed to score another 2 goals with Luke Waugh and Greg Hills both finding the net with help from big deflections. The Boxford defence rarely got troubled throughout the game and the game ended 6v0, meaning another 3 valuable points and their second clean sheet of the season. Results in other games saw title challenging Clacton lose their second game in a week, resulting in Boxford now being out right leaders of the league. Team – Nicholson, Swansborough, Silver(Emery), Dixon(1), A. Waugh, R. Kossick(Gooch), Wilkins, J. Kossick(1), L. Waugh(2), T. Kerr(1), M. Patrick(Hills(1))
League matters are pushed to one side next week when Boxford travel to play Cinque Port in the League Knock Out Cup. Cinque Port play in the Premier Division so it looks likely to be a great game to watch. Horse and Groom 2v1 Boxford Reserves
Boxford Rovers Reserves travelled to high flying Horse and Groom. Boxford struggled throughout the game and found themselves 1v0 down at half time. A Scott Double goal in the second half gave Boxford some hope but they couldn’t capitalise and conceded again to finish with a 2v1 defeat. Boxford will look to get back to winning ways against White Horse Rovers next Sunday. White Horse have conceded the most goals in the league this year so Boxford will be looking for a good result. Boxford 3-1 Clacton United Boxford Rovers had their biggest game of the season, against Clacton United Reserves. Both teams believed that winning this game would make them favourites to win the title this year. Boxford had a strong team and started brightly holding on to possession well, despite the strong winds. However a deflection saw the ball go through the Boxford defence and the Clacton striker made no error to put the away side ahead, which they held on to till half time. The second half began in the same manner as the first half, with Boxford dominating possession and the equaliser soon came. A corner kick wasn’t cleared by the Clacton defence and Matt Silver was on hand to smash the ball in off the underside of the crossbar. Boxford then quickly took the lead, after a good run by Ben Dixon the ball ended up at Luke Waugh feet and he finished well in the bottom corner. Boxford defend very tightly, inspired by Man of the Match Ant Waugh, before good work in the centre of midfield by James Kossick lead to Luke Waugh getting his second of the game and putting the game beyond any doubt. The 3v1 victory keeps Boxford top of the table. Team – Mackie, Harris(Hills), Silver(1), Emery (Swansborough), R. Kossick, A. Waugh(MoM), Wilkins, Dixon, J. Kossick, T. Kerr, M. Patrick(L. Waugh(2)) Boxford’s next game is at home to Great Bentley A at Homefields on Saturday 22nd January. Boxford Reserves game against the Prince of Wales was cancelled. Their next fixture will be away from home against Horse & Groom. Boxford 2010/2011 Season After the 100% record the first team achieved last season, confidence was high at the start of the season, where we found ourselves in Division 1 of the Colchester and East Essex Football League. The season has gone really well so far, as we currently sit top of the table after 10 games. We lost our first game in over a year earlier in the season to New Fields, where we had a lot of injuries to deal with. Our next game, is at Homefields to Clacton United Reserves this Saturday. Clacton are our biggest rivals for the league championship this year. A last minute penalty cost us all 3 points earlier this season in the away fixture, when we drew 2-2, which we are very determined to rectify this weekend. Victory will go along away to helping us win the league again this season. The Sunday team are playing in the Sudbury Sunday League Division 2. We currently are in joint second, on 15 points with 4 other team. A run of a few victories will put us in a great position to finish high in the league. Last Sunday we beat The Breadman Football Club 4v1 in the Don Evans Cup to send us through to the last 16 of the cup. This Sunday sees a return to league football when the Prince of Wales come to Web Meadow. BRFC CHAMPIONS AGAIN! Boxford Rovers FC are Division Two Champions of the Colchester & East Essex League after a 6-1 victory away at the University of Essex on 27th March. This is their fifth successive promotion and their second championship. The team remains one of few in Suffolk with a 100% record in Suffolk and will celebrate in some style should they round off the season in this manner! Boxford Rovers Sunday team are currently top of their respective league in the Sudbury Sunday League - so let's keep the champagne on ice until their promotion is confirmed! Latest News: (13/03/10) Eastcliff 0-2 Boxford Rovers ROVERS' CUP RUN CONTINUES On paper, Boxford were underdogs against an Eastcliff side who manage to comfortably top the Colchester and East Essex League First Division in spite of ending most matches with only ten men. Followers of the Rovers, however, will have been unsurprised that they refused to be bullied and played some good football against a physical, if a little unimaginative, Eastcliff. Ben Taylor opened the scoring, latching on to a through ball and slotting neatly past the Eastcliff ‘keeper. Man of the Match James Kossick scored the second, his trademark runs from the left hand side having caused Eastcliff trouble all afternoon. Eastcliff offered very little aside from a succession of fouls which were more aimless than dangerous. There was little else of note in a comfortable victory for the Homefielders.
(23/01/10) Priory 3-0 Boxford Rovers RUSTY ROVERS' CUP EXIT AT PREMIER DIVISION PRIORY Boxford hadn’t played since early December and, although they appeared to have the upper hand in the first half, a lack of match sharpness betrayed them today. Early forays forward from the Boxford midfield onto the deep line of the Priory defence seemed promising, but failed to create any clear cut chances.
The counter attacking strategy employed by the Premier Division team proved effective and their first goal was the result of a dart through the defence and a near post finish. Rovers, fielding a back four due to the absence of Dixon, Silver and Emery, began to bicker a little and, despite continuing to press Priory back, soon conceded again: another long ball split the defence and an efficient finish doubled the deficit. Some nice wing play from Luke Waugh and energetic midfield displays from the returning Matt Kerr, and (man of the match) Crisell were ultimately fruitless as the first half came to a close. A more open attacking approach from Priory in the second half saw them spurn a plethora of chances and still extend their lead as Rovers reverted to their more familiar 3-5-2 formation and replaced the Kossick brothers (James having been undersupplied despite some good movement and Richard after seeming to suffer a minor concussion) and Swansborough, with the Cunningham brothers and Ward. There was little change in Rovers’ fortunes and, in spite of Ben Patrick’s perseverance, the match ended without any real threats having been posed to the Priory goal. Suffolk FA Primary Cup - Round Two (24/10/09) Somersham 2-2 Boxford Rovers (aet, Somersham win 11-10 on pens) PENALTY NIGHTMARE FOR UNLUCKY ROVERS
In a repeat of last year’s nail-biting quarter final, high-flying Somersham entertained Boxford Rovers in the second round of the Suffolk FA Primary Cup. Somersham took the spoils again in anguishing circumstances as Boxford, 2-1 up until the 79th minutes, missed a penalty after successfully converting the ten before. Somersham started the brighter with some excellent interplay in midfield and using the right wing to good effect. However, Rovers soon brushed off the cobwebs from their enforced week off (Feering Utd calling off last week) and began piecing together some attacking moves. The equaliser came from Ben Patrick who shot through unmarked to deliver past the stranded ‘keeper. James Kossick came close to edging Rovers ahead when his one-on-one was ballooned over the crossbar and Ben Dixon rampaged from central defence into the Somersham penalty box but shot wide. This seemed to recharge the Colchester & East Essex League team who then dominated until the break. The only acutely negative point was Will Crisell limping off with an ankle injury which will see him sidelined for 6-8 weeks. After the break, James Kossick made up for his spurned opportunity by belting home a terrific half volley just outside the area. Somersham attempted to take the game to the visitors but Rovers clung on mainly thanks to some impressive saves from Andy Mackie in the Boxford goal. However, with only ten minutes left on the clock and with Somersham down to 10 men after a sending off, the home team equalised. It was a shock Rovers never recovered from and after 10 expertly dispatched penalties a hugely unlucky Ben Patrick saw his penalty saved. Somersham march on again but Rovers will be looking for their fifth promotion to keep their spirits up. Boxford Rovers: Mackie, Dixon, Swansborough, Silver, Crisell (B.Cunningham), L.Waugh, Martin, B.Patrick, J.Kossick, Ward (Gooderham) and T.Kerr (A.Cunningham).
Latest News: TreadFirst Sudbury Sunday League Division 4 (18/04/2010) Boxford Rovers Reserves 3 - 2 Melford Razors ROVERS RESERVES LEAGUE CHAMPIONS! Pipping the Prince by a single point made the fact of the league victory especially sweet, but there was nothing sweet about Sunday morning’s football match. The tension was evident from the very beginning and Rovers did their best to give their (not unworthy) opponents the upper hand in the early minutes. Melford Razors’ long throw specialist gave the game a dynamic that Rovers were not used to and clearly uneasy with, memories of all those set piece goals conceded in the dark days flooded unbidden back. Boxford opened the scoring, Ward towering to head home a corner to rapturous applause. Boxford failed to dominate and fear of the long throws caused panicking at the back, particularly uncharacteristic of Boxford’s favoured triangles-out-from-the-back style. Melford were able to lump balls forward, knowing that they would cause problems for a Boxford defence robbed of safety. Rovers went in at the break a goal ahead, but there was a great deal more to be done on this baking hot morning. Negativity crept into certain quarters of the side, and it wasn’t long before Razors capitalised on a breakdown of communication, nipping between defender and goalkeeper to score from what should have been a comfortably collected over hit pass. Boxford regained a little of their style and a beautiful passing move culminated in Luke Waugh hitting the ball high into the Melford net, Wallace having unselfishly squared. Rovers' cushion was plumped when Waugh again darted into the left hand side of the box and leathered the ball in off the helpless ‘keepers outstretched left hand. As the game drew towards its final throes Boxford lost Captain Cooper to a hamstring injury, he was replaced by the indomitable Hayton and Ben Cunningham took the armband. Melford, motivated to take a win from their final game, pressed and pressed and were rewarded when a Boxford attack broke down leaving several players out of position. Melford’s no.72 ran past several Rovers players, who were over cautious in their attempts to avoid conceding a throw-in, and sent a cultured curling finish across goal to reduce the deficit. Rovers’ nerves were stretched to breaking point and their football disappeared, allowing Razors to press higher and higher and create chances, shots flashing over the bar and scraped away by a desperate defence. The sun roasted players were finally relieved from duty, the whistle rang out and the tension collapsed into an exhausted celebration. This league victory will be very pleasant for Rovers’ young players (who have, en masse, shown themselves not only to be ready for senior football, but to be exceptionally talented players and winners) , but their satisfaction will be of a wholly different sort to that felt by those who endured the soul destroying 08/09 season, who have been vindicated in their beliefs; in craft over crunch, of sportsmanship over size, and in themselves against all comers. TreadFirst Sudbury Sunday League Division 4 (11/04/2010) Boxford Rovers Reserves 8 - 1 Glemsford and Cavendish ROVERS SHOW TITLE CREDENTIALS AFTER EARLY SCARE Boxford went into this game knowing that anything other than a win could jeopardise their slim lead at the top of the division, and they went behind after a flaw in the offside trap left a Glemsford and Cavendish striker with only Rowlands to beat. However, Rovers’ deficit was swiftly nullified as Wallace scrambled home after Glemsford failed to clear a cross. Rovers then found space to pass the ball across the edge of the Glemsford area and, when it reached the right hand side, Whitwell passed it hard into the roof of the net, giving Boxford the lead. Rovers third came when marauding full back (Anthony) Waugh found the far low corner with a neatly struck shot from the right hand side of the area. Glemsford offered less and less as the half went on and Whitwell created for Ward after a run (including a roulette) which took him past four men to the by-line to the left of the goal. He knocked it back to an unmarked Ward, who had time to control the ball and put sufficient power on his shot to render the ‘keeper’s getting a hand to the ball ineffectual. Ward was again predatory as he poached Taylor’s shot on the goal line amid suspicions of offside. At half time, Rovers’ 5 – 1 lead made the second half a formality... A formality which provided the opportunity for Whitwell to continue his stellar performance with a hat trick which included a corner (!) and a long range free kick. Ward was the second player to complete his hat trick, scoring the final goal after a throw in, a nice turn and a placed shot around the hapless ‘keeper into the far bottom corner. The second half was all about the performance of man-of-the-match Wallace, whose constant movement created acres of space, made a mockery of the Glemsford offside trap and gave BRFCR a shape and a dynamic that was utterly unplayable (even though he contrived to miss a hatful of chances!) Taylor’s performance, as a ball winning central midfielder, also deserves a mention and was notable for his cultured passing. Glemsford and Cavendish didn’t capitulate completely and played nobly to the end, but to no avail. Bring on Melford Razors. TreadFirst Sudbury Sunday League Division 4 (21/03/2010) Boxford Rovers Reserves 6 - 1 Haverhill Rose Tavern BRFCR TAKE THE LEAD IN TITLE RACE Boxford Rovers’ Reserves demonstrated their year-long turnaround today by taking the lead in the title race with just two games remaining. This was less of a consequence of events at Webb Meadow than those at Puddlebrook where Prince of Wales lost to Suffolk Punch. That said, Rovers’ Reserves made things very difficult for themselves after being awarded two penalties in the first three minutes (Milner wrestled to the ground at byline – Kerr slotted bottom corner and Luke Waugh tripped on edge – Ward low left saved and put rebound past right post.) HRT were galvanised by their feeling of injustice and gave a spirited performance until the break, bringing the scores to 1 - 1 with a well crafted move, through ball and finish. Boxford were poor in the first half, always looking for killer balls and thus keeping themselves under pressure. The second half started a little better with the introduction of Whitwell and a new composure on the ball. The Rovers’ passing game began and almost bore fruit immediately but for some unfortunate finishing. Matt Kerr, midfield general, having been drafted in again and put in his usual uncompromising shift, suffered a non-contact ligament injury and was carried from the pitch. Down to ten, Rovers’ Reserves adopted an unprecedented 4-3-2 with Milner playing at left wing back. This gamble paid off instantly as he careered forward and put his cross perfectly into the stride of top scorer Luke Waugh, who finished with aplomb. Boxford were in the ascendancy and Luke Waugh scored again to put the result beyond question. The floodgates opened, a Whitwell free kick found both Tim Kerr and Ben Taylor unmarked in front of goal, Kerr shouting loudest and putting his header between the ‘keepers up stretched arms. Kerr completed his hat-trick with a more typical placed shot minutes later. The final piece of magic in the match saw Whitwell score an ineffable chip from the sideline after a well worked short corner. The flailing ‘keeper was taunted by the flawlessly weighted shot as it dropped over him into the far corner. Rovers showed once again that their mental strength is now sufficient to overcome the sorts of difficult passages which would have broken them before, and that by their technique and athleticism they are able to turn spirited scraps into sublime showpieces. We wish Matt Kerr a speedy recovery. Latest News: TreadFirst Sudbury Sunday League Division 4 (14/03/2010) Boxford Rovers Reserves 3 - 1 North Street Tavern ROVERS RESERVES' REVENGE Bitter at having been dumped out of the league cup (probably their only hope of a trophy this season) by an opponent they considered to be inferior, Boxford were eager to settle some scores in this league fixture with North Street Tavern. Surprisingly (considering the aforementioned cup tie) this was a very good natured match and both teams attacked with vigour. Tavern opened the scoring when their player/manager escaped his marker to latch on to a deep free kick and finish with ease, but the goalscorer seemed to be their only idea and, being hereafter marked , his (and thus NST’s) threat was nullified. Boxford were not behind for long as Luke Waugh was soon beating even his own team mate Taylor to a through ball and netting composedly. Waugh was again involved in the second goal, somehow managing, in the midst of a scramble, to head the ball over the Tavern ‘keeper for Wallace to nip in and tuck away. After the break the game was more notable for its controversial and landmark moments: (ex captain) Whitwell and Milner both making cameo appearances, returning after having defected midway through the season, Tavern’s playmaker walking off and a (not contact induced) possibly career threatening tendon injury to a Tavern midfielder. Whitwell was impressive in the second half as Rovers found fourth gear, controlling the match with constant attacks. Taylor made it two goals in two days when he smashed home from close range, Tavern’s defence having failed to clear a throw from Mann. Man of the Match Wallace had been untrackable all game and creative forces Mann and Whitwell ensured a convincing victory for Boxford that keeps the pressure up at the top of the league. TreadFirst Sudbury Sunday League Division 4 (07/02/10) Boxford Rovers Reserves 6 - 0 Wells Hall ROVERS’ RESERVES RETURN TO WINNING WAYS After two months in which Rovers had played two, lost two, conceded 12 and scored 3, they finally found form again with a six-nil victory over bottom of the table Wells Hall. Two each for the usual suspects Ward, Waugh (Luke) and Taylor, and a clean sheet from commanding stand in ‘keeper Ben Cunningham secured the points on this chilly February 7th.
Where - in the cup defeat to NST - Rovers’ Reserves had lacked a little physicality, Ward, Taylor, Mann and Hayton ensured that this was not the case again and a sterling performance from holding midfielder Double was the basis for the fluid attacking football that has been characteristic of Rovers’ assault on this division. Rovers’ first saw Ward lash home after indecision in the Wells Hall defence and the opportunist added to his tally by getting the final touch minutes later as Luke Waugh’s shot crossed the line. Waugh then got his own brace either side of half time before Taylor appropriated the mantle, tapping in a Waugh cross before latching onto a through ball from Ward, taking it round the ‘keeper and slotting the ball composedly into the open goal from an acute angle. A comfortable but necessary victory for title-chasing Boxford Rovers. Division 4 Cup 1st Round (24/01/10) Boxford Rovers Reserves 3 - 5 North Street Tavern BOXFORD BULLIED OUT OF CUP TIE Boxford looked their usual selves in the first fifteen minutes as they created chance after chance with intelligent wing play. Having been thwarted by the impressive NST ‘keeper and the posts and bar, Boxford were knocked when indecision between the centre halves allowed Tavern’s striker to latch onto a long ball and slot the ball past the unfortunate Gill in the Rovers’ goal. Rovers Reserves continued to play their football, but after more florid domination their defence was breached for a second time, the ball scrappily poked into their net after they had failed to clear a corner. Lady luck again smiled on North Street Tavern as they were awarded a rather dubious penalty (no slight on the referee, to whom we are all very grateful) for a foul that seemed to have been committed outside the penalty area.
Three goals down, Boxford finally found their way to the back of the net, Luke Waugh opening for the Rovers after a slightly less aesthetic move. The football returned though and Waugh netted another with a neater finish after some good attacking play. Evans scored the equaliser as the first half came to an end, firing past the ‘keeper’s outstretched hand. The momentum should have been with Boxford coming into the second half, but another scrappy corner goal gave Tavern the lead again. Then some rather less than sporting measures began to be applied. Boxford’s young team were intimidated out of the game by thuggish Tavern tactics. A long range shot compounded the defeat and Boxford ceased to attack so incisively after the withdrawal of the Waugh brothers and Matt Kerr. A thoroughly dissatisfactory result and match. | |
